Creating Charming Smiles

Do I need to wear my retainer?

Do I need to wear my retainer?

One of the most common questions people ask is whether they will need to wear a retainer after orthodontic treatment. This question can be asked at any stage in the course of a patient’s orthodontic treatment. The simple answer is “Yes”. Let us delve a little bit more into the world of orthodontic retention.

Why retainers are important?

So you have just completed your course of orthodontic treatment and achieved the smile you have always wanted but the journey is not quite over. As a living being, nothing about you is static. Your body changes over time, your hair grows, blood cells change over and teeth can move. This means that the teeth can relapse to the pre-orthodontic position or drift in some other direction, erasing all the time and effort of wearing braces.

What retainers do is attempt to reduce the amount of movement that can take place.

Types of retainers

Types of retainers can be broadly divided into 2: fixed and removable. Each has advantages and disadvantages, and Dr. Carolyn will determine which one or ones are most appropriate for you.

  1. Fixed retainers
    • These are thin wires glued to the back of your front teeth. In most instances they are put on just the bottom teeth, but a growing number of orthodontists put them on the top teeth as well
    • They are unobtrusive and aren’t removed every day which means that you can’t forget to wear them
    • However, the do make cleaning slightly more challenging, but your dentist and orthodontist can help you in that manner
  2. Removable
    • Hawley
      • These retainers are a combination of metal wires and an acrylic plate which can be adjusted for a better fit
      • They can be removed for eating and for cleaning and are fairly durable
      • They aren’t very aesthetic though and require a laboratory to assist with repairs if broken
    • Clear Retainers
      • These are a clear plastic tray, similar to Invisalign trays that fit snugly over the teeth
      • Virtually invisible and fairly comfortable to wear and can be used as a whitening tray as well.
      • They need to be taken out to eat and drink and are more prone to wear and tear leading and may need replacement more frequently

How long do I need to wear my retainers?

There are 2 responses to this question depending on what aspect of timing you are looking at.

From a long-term perspective, retainers should be worn for as long as you would like to keep your teeth straight.

Dr. Carolyn will direct you personally concerning your specific case, but normally, during the first year it is recommended, retainers may be worn day and night in all cases where they are fitted, except, of course during meals and in brushing or sporting activities. Continuing to wear at least at bedtime will help preventing unwanted movements to happen.

Retainer care

Proper care and maintenance are what you need to get the best out of your retainer.

  • Keep them clean:  Your removable and fixed retainers should be kept clean; Dr. Carolyn will direct you through this process.
  • Store them in a case: There is no chance tissues or even hankies can help out. A very good case provides protection against losing or damaging the retainers.
  • Avoid heat: Do not expose your removable retainers to hot water and/or direct sunlight, as this may cause the material to distort or warp.
  • Review: Follow up with your post orthodontic review program with Dr. Carolyn and use your general dentist for checking on your retainer to maintain the good condition of it.
