Meet Dr Carolyn Ng

Dr Carolyn Ng is a registered specialist orthodontist with over two decades of clinical experience. She holds a Bachelor of Dental Surgery from the University of Melbourne and a Doctor of Clinical Dentistry (Orthodontics) from the University of Sydney, one of Australia's most competitive specialist orthodontic programs.

Dr Carolyn is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons, a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh, and a certified provider of Invisalign, Incognito lingual braces and Angel Aligners. She is an active member of the Australian Society of Orthodontists, the American Association of Orthodontists and the World Federation of Orthodontists.

At her Hawthorn clinic, Dr Carolyn personally plans and oversees every stage of treatment — from your first consultation through to your final result and retainers.

A specialist orthodontist has completed an undergraduate dental degree plus a minimum of three additional years of full-time postgraduate training in orthodontics. In Australia, the title "specialist orthodontist" is protected by AHPRA — only registered specialists may use it. A general dentist may offer some orthodontic treatments but has not completed this additional specialist training.

The cost of orthodontic treatment varies depending on the complexity of your case and the appliance chosen. At our Hawthorn clinic, we provide a full treatment quote at your initial consultation. We offer flexible payment plans to spread the cost over the duration of treatment. Private health insurance with orthodontic cover may also contribute to your costs — we recommend checking your policy with your fund.

The Australian Society of Orthodontists recommends a first check-up around age 7, when enough adult teeth have come through to identify developing problems. That said, orthodontic treatment is effective at any age — many of our patients are adults.

Most treatments take between 18 and 24 months depending on complexity, appliance type and patient compliance. Simple cases can be completed in under 12 months; complex cases involving jaw correction or surgery may take longer.

We offer metal braces, tooth-coloured ceramic braces, lingual hidden braces, Invisalign and clear aligners, growth modification appliances, TADs, surgical orthodontics and retainers. Dr Carolyn will recommend the most appropriate option for your specific case at your consultation.

For many cases, yes. Invisalign and clear aligners can achieve excellent results for mild to moderate crowding, spacing and bite issues. For more complex cases, traditional braces or lingual braces may give more precise control. Dr Carolyn will advise which option is best suited to your teeth and goals.

We accept all major private health funds including Medibank, BUPA and HCF. The amount covered depends on your level of orthodontic cover. We recommend contacting your fund before your consultation to understand your entitlements.
